✨ “Good writing is well-structured writing. If your ideas are a house, paragraphs are the walls that hold it together.”
Proper paragraphing is not just about breaking text—it’s about creating a logical flow that helps the examiner follow your analysis easily. IELTS Writing Task 1 responses that are well-organized into paragraphs score higher in Coherence and Cohesion.
📚 Why Paragraphing Matters
Examiners look for a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph should serve a distinct purpose. If your writing is just one block of text or paragraphs are mixed up, it becomes hard to read—and you’ll lose marks.
📦 Recommended Structure
Your Task 1 report should have 4 main sections, each as a paragraph:
| Paragraph | Purpose |
|---|---|
| 📌 Introduction | Paraphrase the question using your own words. |
| 🧭 Overview | Highlight the main trends or overall picture. |
| 📊 Body Paragraph 1 | Focus on the first key feature(s) in detail. |
| 📈 Body Paragraph 2 | Focus on another set of key data or comparisons. |
If needed, you can add a third body paragraph, but for most tasks, two are sufficient.
✅ Example Paragraph Breakdown (Line Graph)
Question: The line graph shows the number of international students in Australia between 2005 and 2015.
🔹 Introduction
📌 “The line graph illustrates the number of international students enrolled in Australian universities over a ten-year period from 2005 to 2015.”
✔ Paraphrased and to the point.
🔹 Overview
🧭 “Overall, the number of international students increased significantly during the period, with the most notable growth occurring between 2008 and 2012.”
✔ Gives a snapshot of the key trend.
🔹 Body Paragraph 1
📊 “In 2005, there were approximately 200,000 students. This figure rose gradually until 2008, when it stood at around 300,000. Between 2008 and 2012, the growth was more rapid, reaching 450,000 by 2012.”
✔ Focus on one part of the graph with precise data.
🔹 Body Paragraph 2
📈 “From 2012 to 2015, the number of students continued to grow but at a slower pace, ending at just over 500,000. This trend suggests a possible stabilization in international enrollments by the end of the period.”
✔ Covers the remaining data, comparison, and trend.
🧠 Smart Writing Tip:
⚖️ Each body paragraph should focus on a different feature, time period, or comparison. Avoid mixing different trends in one paragraph.
🚫 Common Mistakes to Avoid
| ❌ Mistake | 💡 Fix |
|---|---|
| Writing everything in one giant paragraph | Break it into 4 clear sections |
| Starting with details before giving an overview | Always give the overview after the intro |
| Randomly mixing data from all parts of the visual | Group data logically by time, category, or trend |
✨ Helpful Phrases for Paragraphing
- Introduction: “The chart illustrates…”, “The diagram shows…”
- Overview: “Overall, it can be seen that…”, “Generally speaking…”
- Body Paragraphs: “In detail…”, “It is evident that…”, “Between X and Y…”
