Taking IELTS in Pakistan
IELTS is run in Pakistan by the British Council and IDP (through AEO Pakistan), on computer, in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Faisalabad, Multan, Peshawar and more than 15 other cities – see IELTS test centres in Pakistan. Paper-based IELTS is now only for candidates approved for special arrangements, and computer results usually arrive within 1–3 days.
Listening, Reading and Writing are taken together on the computer in about 2 hours 40 minutes. Speaking is a face-to-face interview with an examiner, on the same day or within a week before or after.
The test fee for Academic and General Training is PKR 75,600–76,240 depending on the city – see the full IELTS fee in Pakistan for UKVI, Life Skills, One Skill Retake and re-marks. Always confirm the fee and dates on the official British Council or IDP website when you book.
A four-week IELTS study plan
Week 1
Learn the format. Take one full test in practice mode to find your starting band and your weakest skill.
Week 2
Listening and Reading question types – one part a day. Review every wrong answer with the transcript or passage.
Week 3
Writing: a Task 1 and a Task 2 every other day, compared with model answers. Speaking: record a cue card daily.
Week 4
A full timed mock test twice a week in simulation mode, then fix the mistakes they show.
Where Pakistani candidates lose marks
- Listening speed and accentsFast native speakers and unfamiliar accents. Regular practice with real test audio closes the gap quickly.
- Spelling in ListeningA correct answer spelt wrong scores zero. Learn the spellings of common words, days, months and numbers.
- Articles and prepositions“a / an / the” and “in / on / at” slips add up in Writing and Speaking. Check them in your last minutes.
- Translating from UrduThinking in Urdu and translating word by word makes sentences unnatural. Learn common English phrases as whole chunks.
- Memorised answersLearned templates and rehearsed speeches are easy for examiners to spot and pull your score down.
- Time in ReadingNo transfer time and three long passages – practise with the timer on until 20 minutes per passage feels normal.
