7 IELTS Listening habits that cost you easy marks
Most lost marks in Listening have nothing to do with understanding English. Fix these seven habits and watch your score climb.
You understood the recording – so why is your score lower than you expected? In our experience, most lost marks in IELTS Listening come from habits, not from comprehension.
1. Ignoring the word limit
If the instructions say ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER, an answer of “a red car” is wrong even if “red” is correct. Read the limit before every set of questions.
2. Writing the first thing you hear
Speakers often correct themselves: “The meeting’s on Tuesday – oh no, sorry, it was moved to Thursday.” The first option is a distractor. Wait for the speaker to finish the idea.
3. Not predicting the type of answer
Before the audio starts, look at each gap and ask: is this a number, a name, a place, a plural noun? Predicting makes the answer jump out when you hear it.
4. Spelling mistakes
Misspelt answers score zero. Practise spelling common IELTS words – accommodation, environment, government, necessary, temperature – and names spelt out letter by letter.
5. Losing your place
If you miss an answer, let it go and move to the next question immediately. Use the question numbers and the speaker’s signposting (“Now, moving on to the facilities…”) to find your place again.
6. Forgetting plurals
“Three bedroom” is wrong if the speaker said “three bedrooms”. Listen for the final -s.
7. Only practising in practice mode
Practice mode is perfect for learning – pause, rewind, check a word. But the real test plays each recording once. Every week, sit at least one listening test in exam mode so you’re used to the pressure.
Put it into practice
Try a listening test and see your band in minutes.
