Master 5 simple frameworks that help you give strong answers to easy questions and freeze-proof answers to difficult ones.
Framework 1: PAST-PRESENT-FUTURE
Structure:
- PAST: What it was like before
- PRESENT: Current situation
- FUTURE: What might happen next
Example for "Describe your hometown":
"My hometown used to be a small quiet village with just a few shops. Now it's grown into a busy town with lots of restaurants and supermarkets. In the future, I think it might become even more developed with new shopping centers."
Framework 2: 3-STEP OPINION
Structure:
- State your opinion clearly
- Give 2 reasons with examples
- Explain the impact/conclusion
Example for "Should children learn music?":
"I believe children should definitely learn music. Firstly, it helps develop creativity and imagination. For example, when children learn to play instruments, they have to think about rhythm and melody. Secondly, music education improves concentration skills. Studies show that musicians often perform better academically. Overall, music education has long-term benefits for children's cognitive development."
Framework 3: ADVANTAGES-DISADVANTAGES-BALANCE
Structure:
- List 2 advantages
- Mention 1-2 disadvantages
- Give your balanced conclusion
Example for "Social media advantages":
"Social media has both advantages and disadvantages. On the positive side, it helps people stay connected with friends and family worldwide. Another benefit is that it provides easy access to information and news. However, there are drawbacks like privacy concerns and excessive screen time. Overall, I think the benefits outweigh the disadvantages when used responsibly."
Framework 4: PROBLEM-SOLUTION-EVALUATION
Structure:
- Describe the problem
- Suggest 2 solutions
- Evaluate which is better
Example for "Traffic congestion":
"Traffic congestion is a major problem in many cities. One solution could be to improve public transportation by adding more buses and trains. Another approach is to implement congestion charges like in London. I think improving public transport is more effective because it encourages people to leave their cars at home rather than just making driving more expensive."
Framework 5: COMPARISON-CONTRAST-ANALYSIS
Structure:
- Compare two things/situations
- Highlight key differences
- Analyze implications
Example for "City vs countryside living":
"Living in a city compared to the countryside offers different advantages. Cities provide better job opportunities and access to amenities like shopping and entertainment. However, countryside living offers cleaner air and a more peaceful environment. Ultimately, the choice depends on whether you prioritize career opportunities or quality of life."
